Who we are

Assistant Treasurer

Rachael Nafuna is currently working as a librarian at Watoto child care ministries, she is also a student pursuing a Masters degree in Information Science at Makerere University. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Library and Information Science (Mak). She has also attended and completed trainings in Electronic records Management, KOHA Integrated Library Management Systems, D-Space Repository Software, Turnitin and Emerging Trends in Information Management.

Treasurer

With over 14 years of experience in the library and information science field, I have had the privilege of serving at esteemed institutions such as Kampala International University (KIU), Uganda Christian University (UCU), and currently, Aga Khan University.

Assistant General Secretary

Dennis Kakande is an innovative librarian with a Bachelor of Library & Information Science Degree (UCU) with certification from ALCTS, a division of ALA, among others. Dennis has over 10 years of experience in librarianship, and throughout his career, he has held various library positions.

Vice President

Okello Gilbert is a Library and Information Science scholar pursuing a Ph.D. at Makerere University’s East African School of Library and Information Science. His research focuses on culturally rooted and indigenized information services, emphasizing Africa’s unique knowledge systems. He holds a Master of Information Science from Mount Kenya University and has over 15 years of expertise in information systems development, library science, and knowledge management.

Who We Are

 

The Uganda Library and Information Association (ULIA) is the national professional body that represents and brings together library and information science (LIS) professionals in Uganda. The Association serves as the central platform for individuals and institutions involved in the creation, management, and dissemination of information.

Advancing LIS profession : ULIA & CUUL Leaders Advocate for Recognition and Support at UVCF

During the Vice Chancellors Forum AGM at Kabale University on 17 Feb 25, Libraries in Uganda were given special consideration on the Agenda to make presentation to UVCF. Presentations were well received from ED RENU, EC CUUL and President ULIA. As a noble gesture the VC of Kabale University presented gifts to the presenters! Key discussions revolved around the pressing issues facing university libraries in Uganda and the need for collective action. The right to information is a fundamental human right that enables transparency, accountability, informed participation, and sustainable development. Access to information empowers individuals and communities to make informed decisions and actively engage in social, economic, and civic life.

The Uganda Library and Information Association (ULIA) promotes the realization of the right to information through professional practice, advocacy, capacity building, and public awareness.
